SAG-AFTRA is the union that represents film, television, commercial, voice, and new media performers in the United States. Joining opens the door to union jobs, higher minimum pay, health and pension plans, and on set protections. You cannot simply pay to join, though. You have to become eligible through union work first. Here is exactly how that works.

Key takeaways

  • There are three main ways to become eligible: one day as a principal performer, three days of union background work, or a year in an affiliated union plus a principal job.
  • Once eligible, you pay a one time initiation fee plus dues. Your local SAG-AFTRA office confirms the current amount.
  • Most new actors work non union first, build a resume, and become eligible through a booking.
  • Do not pay anyone who promises to “get you a SAG card.” Eligibility only comes from real union work.

The three ways to become SAG-AFTRA eligible

1. Book a principal role on a union production

Working one day as a principal or speaking performer (or as a recording artist) under a SAG-AFTRA contract makes you eligible to join. This is the most common route for actors who land a role in a union commercial, TV show, or film. Producers can hire non union actors for union jobs in certain situations, which is how many people get their first union credit.

2. Work three days as a union background actor

Background actors become eligible after three days of background work under a SAG-AFTRA contract. On many productions a limited number of union background spots go to non members, so building relationships with background casting companies matters. Note that the union asks for proof such as pay stubs or contracts. A background voucher by itself does not count as proof of work. Start with our guide on how to become a background actor.

3. Transfer from an affiliated union

If you have been a paid up member of an affiliated performers’ union (ACTRA, Actors’ Equity, AGMA, or AGVA) for at least one year and have worked at least once as a principal performer in that union’s jurisdiction, you can apply to join SAG-AFTRA.

Step by step: how to join once you are eligible

  1. Gather proof of work. Keep your contract, pay stub, or payroll records from every union job.
  2. Confirm eligibility with SAG-AFTRA. If your work is not already on record, the union has an employment verification process for submitting documents.
  3. Contact your local. SAG-AFTRA has locals across the country. Your local confirms your joining fee and next steps.
  4. Pay the initiation fee and dues. There is a one time initiation fee plus ongoing annual dues based on earnings. Fees vary, so check current amounts with the union directly.
  5. Update your materials. Add “SAG-AFTRA” to your acting resume and let your agent know.

Should you join SAG-AFTRA right away?

Not always. Once you join, you generally cannot accept non union acting work, and in smaller markets much of the available work is non union. Many actors stay eligible but wait to join until they are booking union work regularly. Talk with your talent agent about the work available where you live before you decide.

Benefits of SAG-AFTRA membership

Watch out for “SAG card” scams

No class, website, or manager can sell you union membership. If someone charges a fee to make you union eligible, walk away and read our scam red flags guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to join SAG-AFTRA?

There is a one time initiation fee plus annual dues. The amount is set by the union and can change, so confirm the current cost with SAG-AFTRA or your local office once you are eligible.

Can I join SAG-AFTRA without experience?

No. You must first complete qualifying union work or transfer from an affiliated union.

Do background vouchers count toward eligibility?

Three days of union background work can make you eligible, but you need proof of employment such as pay stubs or contracts. A voucher alone is not accepted as proof.

Can kids join SAG-AFTRA?

Yes. Child performers become eligible the same way adults do, through qualifying union work. See our parent’s guide.
